The slot is the ideal option for wideouts that are quick, since they can get open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who's not a speedy wideout, but could benefit from more slot work. He's a solid player for intermediate and short routes.
The bottom of the list features more possession-based receivers who are better on short and intermediate routes than in deep areas like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy, who will be the Rams principal slot receiver this season is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler is likely to be a star on short-to-mid routes, since that's what he did well in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Hamler could be a great replacement for departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.
Percentage of Snaps In Slot
The percentage of snaps that receivers take in the slot could be a good indicator for their ability to run routes that are deep. It is not always an accurate reflection of a receiver's skills because certain receivers are better in the slot, but they can't play more deep.
Alshon Jeffrey, as an example is the league leader in goals per game (4.8) however, he is only ranked 6th in the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets have come from the outside, and it's hard to get a first down on a wide-open deep route in that setting.
Some receivers are better at playing inside, whereas others struggle on the outside. For instance the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he ran 74 percent of his slot routes as opposed to just 26% for boundary routes. This is a significant difference and shows just how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.
Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of his passing downs and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51% of his perimeter routes in the last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.
Speed receivers tend to be more effective when they are lined up inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field and often face one-on-1 coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.
On the other hand we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to create pressures during the pass game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the highest tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Through using McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime packages, and then placing McDuffie on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. Additionally, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge asset when playing in the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's worth noting that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. Wide receivers with an excellent slot grade score touchdowns in the same way as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers, compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.
It's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than many of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.
He also plays at the X-position and makes big plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as explosive as some of the other players on this list but he is still a high-graded wide receiver who fits well into the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman, a player who is able to put up big numbers with both types of targets, is another example. He is one of the top players in the league at throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic player who can play contested catch.
Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important member of his team's defensive line. On the contrary, he's been unable to block passes from the outside and has given a negative EPA against these types of targets. jackpot slots has been a result of playing with subpar linebackers and safeties that can't match up with Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
